“I think (it’s because of) the guys up front,” defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. “Our defensive line has played very stout at the point of attack and our linebackers have played very solid for us inside.”
Fitzgerald, a four-time Pro Bowl receiver, is the team’s biggest name, especially since retired quarterback Kurt Warner now is getting all his TV time on Dancing with the Stars. But Beanie Wells has changed the personality of the Cardinals into a more balanced group.
Wells gained 793 yards and scored seven touchdowns as a rookie last season and appears poised to become a primary back after returning from an injury. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry against the Raiders last week in his first game of nfl jersey
the season.
“They have a very sophisticated running game,” Turner said. “They give you a lot of different schemes. They’ve got three very good runners. They change it up. They have great play action off of it, so they’re a complete offense.”
A win would thrust the Bolts back to .500.
“We have been in this position before, all too familiar,” Philip Rivers said. “That doesn’t mean we’re automatically going to be able to get out of it, but we certainly do understand the mindset that it’s going to take to get ourselves out of it.”
The Chargers have a four-year win streak running in the AFC West. The Cardinals’ own run has lasted two years, but one of them ended in the Super Bowl.

Sunday’s 1:15 p.m. kickoff won’t do much to settle their respective divisions, but it will be one indication of how they respond to a first three weeks that haven’t been perfect.
The Cardinals (2-1) still are looking to incorporate new quarterback Derek Anderson into the offense with teams giving Larry Fitzgerald a lot of attention and Arizona’s second and third receivers out with injuries.
Despite averaging 5.8 yards per carry on offense, the Cardinals have placed some pressure on their defense early. As Seattle scored a couple of special-teams touchdowns against the Chargers (1-2) to spring them to a 2-1 start in the NFC West, Arizona kept pace by forcing Oakland into some missed field goals and returning a kick of their own for a touchdown.
Special teams will draw attention this week, particularly when San Diego kicks the ball to LaRod Stephens-Howling. The Chargers have a chance to prove they can adjust against one of the NFL’s best returners through three games.
“I’m excited about what we’ve been able to do. Obviously we’ve added a player (in Quinton Teal ). We’ve made some adjustments in terms of what we’re doing,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “(Stephens-Howling) is capable of making a return. He can play outstanding. We have to be as consistent as we can and hopefully we get to kick off enough times that we get to work on our kickoff coverage.”
The Chargers will bank on the Dallas Cowboys jersey
No. 2 passing offense in the NFL (345.0 yards per game) as well as a run game that’s added balance. Ryan Mathews , too, could return after missing most of the last two games with an ankle injury.
And San Diego’s defensive front has made leaps in defending the run.
